Hydrogen Tracer Gas

At Southwest Leak Detection we are one of a few companies that use the hydrogen tracer gas method in Western Australia. This is one of the most versatile and cutting edge testing systems available today.

The tracer gas used to find water leaks is a mixture of hydrogen (5%) and nitrogen (95%) making it completely safe to use in drinking water pipes being both non toxic and non corrosive. Hydrogen is the lightest of all gases so as it spreads throughout the leak location and rises to the top making it easier to find even the smallest leak with no noise interference.

Thermal Imaging Equipment

Thermal imaging is used to actually pinpoint where a hot water pipe has burst by locating heat via infrared, often associated with moisture.

We use thermal imaging cameras to assist in the diagnosing and detecting of leaks and for locating hot water pipework in a non-invasive, fast and efficient manner.

Our thermal imaging equipment allows us to measure and detect the changes in surface temperature that is being investigated.

How does gas find a water leak?

The tracer gas mix is safely induced into the pipes and is located with the smallest and lightest atoms rising to the surface and being located.

The hydrogen escapes through the most minute leak, making it’s way to the surface where it is found by gas sensitive detection probes.

Hydrogen concentrations are measured during testing and displayed on the detection units screen.

When an increase in gas is detected the sensors are triggered to tell operator that there is gas in that location.

The precision of this unit allows detection of  very small water leaks when other methods have not worked.

Acoustic Sound Equipment

Acoustic detection equipment is used to localise the lowest consistent noise emitted by water escaping the pipework where the pipes have burst, whilst reducing noise from interfering objects and people.

This method works well when aiming to locate a water leak within underground services that is leaking at a rate of greater than 2 litres per minute.

Searching for a water leak is a non-destructive solution to finding your leak.

At Southwest Leak Detection we take into consideration the damage water can have on a home or business.

We are confident that our state-of-the-art leak detection equipment will find any leak that you may have.
